Scope and content : Photograph by John Vincent of Dunhuang Mogao Cave 249 in 1948 captioned in his list as 'West wall, upper portion of central Buddha sculpture & aureole. A larger view of the figure whose head shows in Pelliot pl. CLXXIX.'' Same as colour Plate 1 in Basil Gray, 'Buddhist Cave Paintings at Tun-Huang' (Faber: London 1959), which is captioned: 'Detailed from a seated figure of Maitreya. Early sixth century.'
