Description

Scope and content : One of seven folios of a ms. on paper (one incomplete) containing the Sanskrit text of the Saddharmapundarika disovered in the stupa above Naupur village near Gilgit in 1931 along with other manuscripts on birchbark. Stein examined them Nos. 1-2 belong to parivarta XI in Kern's edition, no. 3 to XII-XIII, no. 4 to XXIII-XXIV, no. 5 to XXIV, no. 6 to XXVI-XXVII, no. 7 to XXVII (conclusion). Probably 8th century. From p.197: 'Although classified under same shelf-mark, the second set of folios, Or.11878B–G [now Or.11878B(A-G)], were firstly acquired by J. Hackin and previously deposited in Musée Guimet. Later seven folios were transferred to the British Museum (again transferred to the British Library). These belong to the same manuscript of the Saddharmapu??ar?kas?tra, Serial No. 486 in the National Archives of India (= Group C [Watanabe]).'

Stupa above Naupur village , two miles west of Gilgit cantonment at which a hoard of manuscripts, mainly on birchbark, was discovered in 1931 by villagers.

Excavation history : Original discovery by villagers in 1931. Stupa was then excavated by Madhu Sudan Kaul Shastri in August 1948.
