1886

Description

Scope and content : Letter from H. M. Durand to Sir Owen Burne, dated Simla 23 July 1886, enclosing 'a copy of 6 more sketches by my brother,' also '5 extra copies of all his sketches, including the above. These are all we can spare.' This refers to the photographic copies of Edward Law Durand's sketches, made while on duty with the Afghan Boundary Commission, which were produced by the Survey of India. One hundred of the original sketches, and several sets of the photographic copies, are held by the British Library (for the original sketches, see WD 376-475. For the photographic copies, see Photo +++).The letter also states: 'We have no sketches from Lockhart, but he has sent some photographs taken by Dr. [George Michael James] Giles, copies of which I am arranging to be sent to you.' This refers to photographs taken during the Gilgit Mission of 1885-86. These photographs are presumably those now held in the British Library (shelfmark: Photo 1040, formerly held in the Political and Secret Department Library at IOR/L/PS/20/B52A).
