Description
Scope and content : Watercolour, inscribed in ink below painting, 'The Chaous Baushee in his dress of office' and, 'Plate XIII to face page 1205' and in pencil on album page 'by native artist.'This is the original watercolour for the illustration facing the titlepage of Mountstuart Elphinstone, Account of the Kingdom of Caubul (London, 1815). In his text, Elphinstone notes that the 'Chaous Baushee presents persons admitted to pay their respects to the King, dismisses the court, and communicates the King's orders on such occasions, according to set forms in the Toorkee language.'
