Description
Scope and content : Photograph by John Vincent of Dunhuang Mogao Cave 257 in 1948 captioned in his list as 'West wall, Portion in Pelliot CLXXXIX showing deer.' The painting is that reproduced as Plate 4 (colour) in Basil Gray, 'Buddhist Cave Paintings at Tun-Huang' (Faber: London 1959), which is captioned: 'The Deer rescues the King of Benares who afterwards kneels to thank him. About A.D. 500.' Duplicate at Photo 1231/6(79). There is also a 35mm duplicate slide of this.
