Description
Scope and content : Y. 0028. Terra-cotta vessel, lemon-shape, broken at lip, probably used as an Ampulla. It has one small round handle at its upper half, and as a decoration a moulded appliqué monkey (naturalistic) is seated on top, leaning its back against the body of vessel and playing the sitār. The body of vessel is divided into six segments by deeply incised lines extending from the neck to the base. Between these the surface is corrugated by equally deeply incised transverse lines, ridges and depressions being of about equal thickness. The bottom is small and flattened but not accurately enough to enable the vessel to stand. Height 4", width 2⅞", width of neck about 1⅛", diameter at base 1", thickness of material 5⁄16". Yotkan is the site of the ancient capital of Khotan, 5 miles to the west of the present-day Khotan town, on the southern arm of the Silk Road. (Serindia map no. 20, D. 4). Apart from many small terracottas and other artefacts acquired at the site of Yotkan itself, Stein bought other items from people in Khotan and elsewhere. He gave a different site id. to each of these to distinguish their provenance. On his first expedition he used the prefix Y. for this site and Yo. on his second expedition.
