Description
Scope and content : No. 64 in I. Vincent's wallet captioned 'C-8. #220 C270 P064. beg. T'ang N. wall. green, red, grey musicians.' Contact print. Reproduced as Plate 40, Basil Gray and John B. Vincent, 'Buddhist Cave Painting at Tun-Huang' (London, 1959:39) with caption: 'Celestial Musicians. Dated A.D. 642. Cave 220.' and further information 'Twelve players in six rows; and on the opposite side there are again twelve musicians. The instrument are duplicated; there are now three drums on the right, two transverse pipes, two mouth-organs and two vertical pipes. The twenty-four musicians are seated on four square carpets with deep fringes, perhaps a Central Asian rather than a Chinese fashion.'
