Title

Fragment of relief plaque showing a seated Buddha. He has a head nimbus enclosed by a plain band and is shown seated against a vesica bordered by lotus petals. The legs are crossed, the eyes closed, the hands held in the meditation position (dhy_na mudr_). Made of yellowish clay, moulded and fired.;

Find site description

Site in the area of Yurung-kash, 15-20 miles ENE of Khotan on the southern arm of the Silk Road. (Stein 1921: map no. 27, A. 4). Stein found the ruins of a temple and Buddhist shrine. Objects included various stucco and relievo fragments that had been partly preserved by a fire.

Excavation history : Stein excavated here between 18 Sept. and 22 Sept. 1906 (see Stein 1921: 133-153).
