Description

Scope and content : Maroon half-leather bound photograph album, measuring 315 x 455 mm, with leather title label pasted down on front cover. The album contains 94 albumen prints mounted on stiff card leaves, with captions and photographer's reference number written in ink beneath each image.Chronologically, the album covers the period from the beginning of the campaign up to the signing of the Treaty of Gandamak in May 1879. The series is continued in the companion album Photo 430/3.It is clear from a letter from the photographer John Burke to Lord Curzon (BL Mss Eur F111/49 f.118), dated 15 December 1894, that the latter purchased these two albums after his private visit to Kabul the previous month.
