Description
Scope and content : Despatch from the Government of India Foreign Department (Secret/Frontier), to the Secretary of State for India dated Simla 4 June 1886, forwarding a Memorandum of Intelligence received for May 1886. The memorandum contains reports under headings for Central Asia, Afghan Turkistan, Eastern Afghanistan, Dir and Chitral and the Punjab Border.Among other matters, from Central Asia it is reported that the Amir has sent large sums of money to purchase land in Samarkand; from Afghan Turkistan, 'The Amir is reported to have Kila Wali to be occupied by 300 families of the Achakzai tribe, Afghan subjects from Zamindawar. It is said to be His Highness' policy to fringe the frontier with Afghan colonies in order to prevent the contact of the Aimaks with the Russians.' From Eastern Afghanistan, 'Orders have been issued by the Amir for the demolition of the Sherpur Cantonments. The materials will be used for other buildings or sold by auction.'
