Fragment of a handle made of coarse red clay. The thick and heavy handle has an appliqu in the shape of an animal, probably a feline, of which part of the body, the hind legs and the tail remain. The right leg and the body are decorated with deep notches, below the tail are the remains of an appliqu string of beads.

Scope and content : Fragment of a handle made of coarse red clay. Find site description
Site in the area of Yurung-kash, 15-20 miles ENE of Khotan on the southern arm of the Silk Road. (Stein 1921: map no. 27, A. 4). Stein found the ruins of a temple and Buddhist shrine. Objects included various stucco and relievo fragments that had been partly preserved by a fire.
Excavation history : Stein excavated here between 18 Sept. and 22 Sept. 1906 (see Stein 1921: 133-153).
