It contains the non-manuscript items brought to Germany after the four Turfan expeditions of the early twentieth century. The manuscript collections from these expeditions are held in the Berlin-Brandenburg Akademie der Wissenschaften.
This ‘Turfan collection’ consists of hundreds of murals, paintings, textiles, sculptures, and some illuminated manuscripts.
