One of its most significant collection related to the study of the Eastern Silk Roads is the Stein collection, which contains items excavated and acquired by Marc Aurel Stein on expeditions between 1900 and 1916.

This collection contains paintings, sculptures, artefacts, and coins. Items from the Stein collection of a predominately written character, such as manuscripts, became part of the British Library’s collection after its establishment in 1973.
